A Mermaid’s Garden is a digital embroidery in which land and sea merge. Although it appears to contain an underwater reef, the entire imagined environment is constructed from my photographs of wild plants, flowers, fungi and lichens. Stems become branching corals, lichens form encrusted surfaces, and flowers drift through the water like unfamiliar marine life.

As a Master Scuba Diver, I have spent a great deal of time beneath the surface, observing the density and complexity of underwater habitats. This work brings that experience together with the often-overlooked plants I photograph on land. Their structures are remarkably similar: tendrils float, stems twist and clusters of growth compete for light and space.

Bubbles, scattered light and layered textures create a sense of depth and slow movement. Nothing is fixed; the wild plants have adapted to a submerged world, forming a hidden garden that seems both impossible and strangely believable.
