THE GREEN FIELDS OF FRANCE

War, the aftermath and what we are led to believe many years later……The Green Fields of France is an Irish war ballad set in northern France, where the landscape is strewn with cemeteries to the dead of 2 world wars. The song is framed as a conversation between someone visiting the graveyard and someone, Willie McBride, who died in the 1st world war.

I have visited the north of France many times, but inspired by the ballad, I visited some official war graves and D Day landing sites. From this I produced this series of collages, all made using layered images that I have taken myself. I called the series The Green Fields of France.
