The fire has passed, leaving a grey world of ash, scorched earth and smouldering remains. The macaw has survived, but the living forest around her has almost disappeared.

Small pockets of shelter remain among the bare vines. These are refugia—places where plants and animals endure after destruction and from which life may eventually return.

Survival is possible, but it is precarious. What remains must be protected if the forest is ever to recover.
