The forest is being cleared by fire. Trees that have taken centuries to grow, and the complex communities that depend upon them, are destroyed in a matter of hours.

Cattle wait at the edge of the burning land. They represent what will replace the forest: poor pasture that may remain productive for only a few years before the soil is exhausted and more forest is cleared.

At the centre of the work, the macaw is caught within the flames. A lemur appears only as a burning silhouette—a brief trace of an animal and its disappearing world.

This is not an empty landscape waiting to be used. It is a living world being slaughtered and burned.
